Comparative Study of Equilibrated and Unequilibrated Eucrites: Subsolidus Thermal History of Haraiya and Pasamonte Eucrites
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction: The source and duration of the heating event responsible for eucrite metamorphism is not well constrained. Three hypotheses have been proposed for the source of heat: Impact, conduction from the mantle, and rapid production of successive flows [1]. Textural and chemical relationships of noncumulate eucrites are investigated to constrain the thermal and temporal conditions responsible for eucrite equilibration to provide insight into the evolution of the HED parent body. Pasamonte and Haraiya were chosen as they represent extremes on the metamorphic scale [2]. Pasamonte (Type 2) retains primary textures and compositions, but has been partially equilibrated during metasomatism. Haraiya (Type 7), with coarsely exsolved, partially inverted pigeonite, experienced prolonged metamorphism at subsolidus temperatures. 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8 1 1.2

متن کاملOxygen isotope evidence for rapid mixing of the HED meteorite parent body
The 16O, 17O and 18O abundances of howardites, eucrites, and diogenites have been used to assign them to a single ‘HED’ parent body, thought to be asteroid 4 Vesta. We report the first evidence of oxygen isotopic heterogeneity among HED meteorites indicating incompletely mixed sources. New high-precision oxygen isotope measurements of 34 HED meteorites reveal that most have the same v17OP, cons...
متن کاملAR-AR AGES OF EUCRITES AND THE THERMAl HISTORY OF ASTEROID 4-VESTA
New Ar-Ar ages of several cumulate and unbrecciated eucrites cluster at ~4.48 Gyr. We suggest that this age cluster was produced by interruption of eucrite metamorphism within the Vesta parent asteroid by a giant impact, which excavated and rapidly cooled these meteorites. We see no evidence for younger formation ages of the cumulate eucrites, as previously proposed. Introduction. Several obser...
متن کاملImpact histories of angrites, eucrites, and their parent bodies
Eucrites, which are probably from 4 Vesta, and angrites are the two largest groups of basaltic meteorites from the asteroid belt. The parent body of the angrites is not known but it may have been comparable in size to Vesta as it retained basalts and had a core dynamo. Both bodies were melted early by Al and formed basalts a few Myr after they accreted. Despite these similarities, the impact hi...
